The Cross Dressers Guide To Choosing Your Wig

When it comes to choosing your first wig there will be a number of choices you will need to address.

One of the early choices you need to make will be synthetic verses natural hair for your wig. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages which will be covered in this page. Other choices include color, length and styles, which mainly come back to personal preference; however your circumstances may play an important factor in these choices.

Ultimately the final decision will come down to what you feel looks great and makes you happy, I hope this article will be able to make these decisions easier for you.

Hair pieces and wigs come in quite a wide price range, from $50 all the way up to over $2000.  On the more economical side to the scale are the machine made synthetic wigs and the more expensive are the hand knotted, human hair wigs. For many people it is the expense that will lead people towards synthetic choices.

Synthetic wigs have the advantage of being less expensive, easier to care for, and many come with a style already set into the fibres. A well made synthetic wig can look very natural however you need to be aware that they do not have the bounce or flow of natural hair.

Synthetic hair is easy to maintain, and comes in so many colors and styles that you would be able to fill your wardrobe with many different styles, all for the price of a natural hair wig. Synthetic styles can be a little uncomfortable at times and I always recommend wearing a wig cap to help reduce itch that can happen.

Natural hair wigs are the more expensive choices when it comes to wigs. For many that are considered a luxury well worth the investment. Natural hair is often acquired from India and Asia, thus is it often black and straight. To have different styles and color tones, the hair is treated, thus making a little less “natural” in its bounce and flow.

One advantage of a human hair wig is that it can be styled into varied styles, but for some this may be a disadvantage as it needs to be styled after each wash. As previously noted human hair wigs are more expensive and more fiddly so if the wig is going to be living in a box under the bed, I would suggest not buying a natural hair wig.

One choice that is unique to the CD wig buyer is your personal circumstances. Will you be able to have the wig on a stand at home or will it need to be hidden between wears? If you are not able to have the wig out on a stand then I would suggest you go for a shorter length with a style already in the fibres. These types of wigs are often advertised as “Shake and Go” wigs as they do not need any special setting other then a simple sprucing with fingers and a gentle shake in the air.
Longer styles can also be stored however a little more preparation will be required to avoid that “just out of the bag” look some wigs have when not prepared.

In the next articles I will be explaining basic wig care for styling and washing as they can be a little fiddly but come up looking wonderful.

Till then…
