A Crossdressers Guide To Washing Your Wig
|
A beautiful head of hair is essential for the ultimate finish for every crossdresser. Wig's are probably the most prominent accessory with your hairstyle being the first noticable feature as you meet new friends. As wigs and hairpieces are expensive their long life is dependant on how you care for them, and regular cleaning will ensure many happy years from your wigs. After 6-8 wears your wig will need a cleaning. It’s important to remember that hairpieces are different to natural hair and require different shampoos and treatment. The first step to cleaning your wig is to give it a gentle brushing starting form the ends towards the scalp. As previously mentioned it’s important to use a special wire wig brush as normal hair brushes create too much tension that can break the fibres. With the hair free to knots you can immerse your wig into a basin filled with cool water and one cap full of wig wash. If you can't get wig shampoo, use a small amount of baby shampoo. Once well soaked, you can gently swish it in the basin, I like to place my hand within the wig cap and gently wash with a left to right hand movement. You only need to swish for about thirty seconds and after that you can leave it to soak for a minute or two. |
After the soak you can give it a rinse it with fresh cool water. Once the water is clear, lift your wig out of the water and gently squeeze the water out of the hairpiece. For a wonderful shine you can apply some wig conditioner at this time. Some are leave in, some need to be washed out so follow the instructions for your particular brand. If your wig is a curly style, you now pick up each curl and gently squeeze excess water out over your finger. This will help keep the curls in place. At this point I like to place my wig onto a hairspray can to allow the air to circulate and slowly dry the base and hair. One important thing to remember is that traditional ways of drying hair are not suitable for synthetic wigs. Hairdryers will melt the delicate fibres so it’s best to avoid these drying methods. Once dry your wig can be gently restyled to be ready for your next wearing. Of course your hair is just the beginning. In our next section I will be reviewing the tips and tricks for mastering crossdressing makeup. Till then
